Repentance is the match that ignites the fire of God’s power to deliver us from sin. I could say that I need to light that match today, but the truth is, I need to light it every day. Whatever my sin struggle, God will burn it up as I come to Him in repentance.
Repentance means a change of mind. It’s a change of mind that leads to a change of direction. Sometimes it’s a change in our thoughts. Other times it’s a change in our emotions or actions. This match is available whenever we find ourselves believing and, therefore, walking in a manner opposite of what God says is true and holy. At those times, we can go to His Word, agree with His Word, and ask for the truth of His Word to become true in us. We can pray the words of 2 Timothy 2:25-26:
“Grant me repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, that I may come to my senses and escape the trap of the devil, who has taken me captive to do his will.”
The following words, the title of a book by Louie Giglio, help me do this:
I am not, But I know I AM.
Apart from God, I am not free from anger or fear, nor am I free of becoming impatient with or judging even those I dearly love. I simply am not. BUT, I know I AM – I know, have an intimate relationship with, the One called I AM. And just as He delivered the nation of Israel from slavery in Egypt, He will deliver me from the sin that seeks to enslave me.
We strike the match by acknowledging our sin and agreeing with what God says about it. God burns up our lie-based thoughts and behaviors and replaces them with a renewed mind that agrees with and walks by His truth.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9
