Here we are, finally on Way #52. For some of you, this may be the first blog post of mine you’ve read. Others of you have traveled with me through this series— thank you! And though a listing of the “ways” will end with this one, the journey to live for the glory of God (the intended focus of all my blog posts) will continue until the day we see Jesus.
This series began with a specific verse, a cry of my heart:
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
I was so challenged by this verse because of my tendency to live focused on myself. As I ponder this verse once again, I think of an expression spoken by our three year old granddaughter. She’s an energetic little girl with a contagious zeal for life. On any given day, in the most mundane things we present for her to do, she has one primary response — and she speaks it with great gusto:
“Let’s do it!”
I want to emulate her go-getter attitude and enthusiasm as I seek to live for the glory of God. We are a people with an incredible purpose. In fact, there’s no higher purpose for which we could live. It’s a calling that extends to everything we do. Yet as convinced as I am about this purpose, I can still get stuck in the “whatever.” Sometimes I find myself whining about life’s circumstances. It’s pretty pathetic, but I think we all struggle to some degree because we put so much focus on what we do. We tend to let what we do, what we don’t have or what we have to walk through define who we are.
Struggling through this one morning, I sensed God saying: “No matter what I call you to do, your purpose hasn’t changed; only how you express it. Your purpose is to bring glory to Me, and every day you have innumerable opportunities to do it.”
No matter what stage of life, job at hand and circumstances we are walking through, our purpose is the same. Our jobs and ministries don’t define us. They’re simply ways and venues through which we can live for God’s glory. Our mistakes and struggles don’t define us. In fact, all our “stuff” works together to give us unique opportunities to shine with His glory.
I believe God’s FAR less concerned about what we do than that we do it all — WHATEVER it is — for His glory. What we might see as mundane is, from God’s perspective, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Think of it: God sends each one of us to specific places — and gives us assignments there — so that we can shine His glory in ways no one else can.
And He’ll provide what we need to do it:
“I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland…to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for Myself that they may proclaim my praise. Everyone who is called by My name whom I created for My glory” (Isaiah 43:19b-21, 7).
Will you join me in practicing Way #52 of 52 Ways to Glorify God?:
Let’s do it!
Let’s commit our lives to it. Let’s daily seek God for the power to do it. Let’s resolve to let nothing keep us from it. Let’s be people who live for the glory of God!
